The TGA’s decision today will give thousands of people access to MDMA and psilocybin therapy, says Cate Faehrmann, Greens NSW MP and drug law reform spokesperson.

The TGA announced today that from 1 July this year, medicines containing the psychedelic substances psilocybin and MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine) can be prescribed by specifically authorised psychiatrists for the treatment of certain mental health conditions.

“The TGA’s decision will finally allow thousands of people to access this life changing medicine,” says Cate

“Studies have shown amazing results using psychedelic assisted therapy to treat PTSD, anxiety and depression. People who have been unable to experience relief from available treatments have been eagerly awaiting the day they can legally access psychedelic medicine.

“Our country is facing a mental health crisis, with the number of people suffering from a mental illness increasing drastically throughout the pandemic, fires, floods and the economic crisis. These medicines will be a powerful tool to fight that mental health crisis.

“I call on the Federal and NSW Government to invest resources to ensure that patients who need this medicine are able to access it in an affordable, equitable and safe way,” says Cate.
