Greens call for free public transport as fuel prices surge
Greens MP Cate Faehrmann has sent an urgent letter to the Premier calling on him to follow the lead of the Tasmanian and Victorian Governments who have just announced free public transport as a way to help alleviate rising fuel costs and fuel shortages.
The Victorian Government has announced a month of free public transport in April, while Tasmania has gone further giving the people of that state free public transport for three months until 1 July.
“The Greens are calling on the Premier to match Tasmania’s response to the global oil crisis and rising fuel costs and provide three months of free public transport for the people of NSW, or until the crisis eases,” said Ms Faehrmann.
“People across New South Wales are being smashed by rising fuel prices and cost-of-living pressures. The Government can step in right now and make a real difference.
“This is about helping people get to work, get to school and get around without worrying about the cost of petrol or fares. It’s also about ensuring there’s enough petrol for those who need it.
The Greens have long advocated for free public transport, including as a key policy at the 2023 NSW election.
“In the middle of a global fuel crisis, the Government should be making public transport free, fast and accessible, right across Sydney and the regions.”
“This isn’t a radical idea, it’s a practical one whose time has come,” Ms Faehrmann said.
