In 2018 the Western Sydney community successfully stopped a toxic waste to energy incinerator built near homes and schools. A strong community campaign led to the proposal being referred to the Independent Planning Commission, which ultimately refused it due to health concerns, community opposition and inaccurate waste modelling.
Now there’s a renewed push to take advantage of our state’s weak recycling record and the federal ban on waste exports which begins 1 July. Burning waste for electricity produces toxic pollutants and fails to tackle the systemic failure of our economy to adequately reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Only by making our voices heard and joining with others in the community to take action will we stop these disastrous projects.
