ENVIRONMENT & CLIMATE CHANGE
From coastal rainforests to pristine alpine ecosystems, New South Wales is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and home to many of Australia’s most unique wildlife. However, in NSW there are 1025 species listed as threatened while just 9% of NSW is protected in reserves.
Our wild places are under threat like never before and we must urgently repair climate damage and transition to net-negative carbon emissions to return to a liveable climate.
Cate has joined with communities on the NSW mid-north coast in their campaign for a Great Koala National Park to protect koala habitat from logging and create a tourist hub which protects koalas while creating thousands of jobs. She’s fighting to protect Kosciuszko National Park and the species it homes, such as the adorable Broad-toothed Rat, the Greater Glider and the endangered Corroboree Tree Frog, from feral horses that have decimated the ecosystem. And she’s working to transition NSW to a clean, green, renewable energy powerhouse.
In 2019 Cate was elected Chair of the NSW Parliament Environment and Planning Portfolio Committee and secured a groundbreaking Inquiry into Koala Populations and Habitat in NSW. Following devastating bushfires in 2019/2020 that lead to the deaths of thousands of koalas in NSW and Australia, she is more determined than ever to protect our precious koala and other unique wildlife that call NSW home.
